5 Steps to Become Environmentally Friendly with Your Climbing Gear
Climbing is a great way to get exercise and enjoy the outdoors. But like any outdoor activity, it has an impact on the environment. One way to do that is by becoming more eco-friendly with the climbing gear we buy.
In my video below I discuss how to you can be more environmentally friendly with your climbing gear:
Only buy what you need
Before you buy anything, ask yourself if you really need it. Do you already have something that can do the job? If so, don't buy a new one.
Buy secondhand when it's safe to do so
There are a lot of great climbing gear available secondhand. If you're looking for a specific piece of gear, check out your local climbing gym or online marketplaces like Gumtree, Craigslist, or eBay.
Invest in quality pieces that are built to last
When you do buy new climbing gear, make sure it's high quality and built to last. This will save you money in the long run and reduce the amount of waste you produce.
Opt to repair items rather than replacing when possible
If you have a piece that breaks, try to repair it before you replace it. This isn’t often safe for technical gear such as harnesses, quickdraws, or cams. But for clothing and climbing shoes it is a great sustainable option.
Let your wallet do the talking and buy from brands that put sustainability first
There are a number of great sustainable climbing brands out there. Do your research and support companies that are committed to protecting the environment. These brands will often use recycled materials in their products and offset their carbon emissions.
